I joined Hector Avellaneda on the New Class Rising podcast to talk about a tricky situation that way too many young people today face: going to college because they want to get a job, only to find that the job market is not what they thought of it and now they have mountains of debt.

Does it have to be this way?

Absolutely not.

There’s a popular narrative that after K-12 education, if you want to stand any chance of being successful or even gainfully employed, you have to immediately go to college and get a bachelor’s degree. High school counselors, teachers, administrators, and even parents tell young people — who often don’t know any better — that it doesn’t matter what they major in, only that they get a degree.

It looks like there are no options forward for them. It’s either go to college, or be wage laborer for the rest of their lives, they think.

Here’s the fact of the matter…

If you’ve ever done hiring for a company, you know that it is really, really, really hard to find good talent. You know that college degreed or not, hard working, ambitious young talent is hard to come by. You would kill to have a way to find these people before they get fed ideas that they have to go work in Manhattan or Silicon Valley in order to be successful.

That’s why we created Praxis.

We knew business owners, entrepreneurs, and innovators who were hungry to find ambitious young people to work for them. I meet them every day through my work — they are desperate for people who are willing to work hard, learn quickly, and create value. They find one here or there coming out of school, but the best talent for them comes when the person is eager to learn and before college has made it harder for them to think on their toes.

We knew ambitious young people who wanted to go and create a life for themselves starting now. But they were told they had to go to college or graduate school first. I know I was.

Praxis is that option out for them. It’s an opportunity for them to be immersed in a growing company, learning what it is like create value and serve clients and customers, without sacrificing a strong education in subjects like philosophy and economics.
